Post-doctoral position. Royal Observatory of Belgium, Brussels
Description:
Post-doctoral position for the science exploitation of long-term visual sunspot observations and of image-based solar activity indices

The Solar Influences data analysis Center (SIDC) is opening a new post-doc position in the framework of its participation to a new 3-year project, called SoTerIA (Solar-Terrestrial Investigations and Archives), implemented in the framework of the EC 7th Framework Program. The candidate will be involved in the exploitation of long-term archives of photographic and visual observations of sunspots and faculae. This will include in particular the digitization, encoding and global analysis of the entire Uccle-ROB sunspot drawing series that spans 68 years and the definition and the study of new image-based global sunspot indices derived from historical photographic images or from current CCD images, through multi-variate and statistical cross analyses with various global solar activity indices.

The candidate should have a PhD degree in Physics, Mathematics or Statistics, with an experimental or applied orientation (or similar level by experience). Prior experience in solar physics or observational astrophysics and/or in advanced analysis techniques of time series (statistical error and bias analysis, Fourier & wavelet transforms, etc.) is an advantage.

The job will be hosted by the SIDC team, which is part of the Royal Observatory of Belgium (http://www.observatory.be) located in the green outskirts of Brussels, and which runs several international data and forecast services, like the IAU World Data Center for the Sunspot Index and the ISES Regional Warning Center “Brussels”.
The contract will have a duration of 2 years.

Candidates are invited to submit their application and Curriculum Vitae by post, fax or e-mail before September 18, 2009.

The applications or any questions concerning this position should be addressed to:
